Sole Search: How to Measure Your Feet at Home

Getting the right shoe size is not just about comfort. It decides how your shoes fit through the day, how long they last, and how good they look on you. At Lupen, every pair is crafted for the individual, and that starts with an accurate measurement of your feet.

You do not need a measuring tape from a shoe store or a trip anywhere. All you need is a sheet of paper, a pen, and a ruler. Here is a simple, at home method to measure your feet correctly, so your next pair fits like it was made for you (because it is).

Why Accurate Measurement Matters

Every foot is different. Two people with the "same" shoe size on paper can have very different foot shapes, arch heights, and widths. Since Lupen crafts footwear to order, getting your measurements right the first time means:

  • No sizing back and forth after your order is placed
  • A fit that feels natural from day one, without a long break in period
  • Shoes that support your foot properly instead of just covering it

A few minutes with a pen and paper now saves you from a size exchange later.

What You Will Need

  • A flat, hard floor (avoid carpet, it will not give an accurate outline)
  • A plain sheet of paper, A4 size or larger
  • A pen or pencil
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • A wall to rest the paper against (this helps keep it steady)

Step by Step: How to Trace and Measure Your Foot

Step 1: Prepare the Paper

Place the sheet of paper flat on the floor against a wall. The wall gives you a fixed edge to align your heel with, which makes the whole process far more accurate.

Step 2: Trace the Outline

Wear the socks you would normally wear with your shoes, or go barefoot if you usually go sockless with that style. Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and your full body weight resting evenly on that foot, the way you would while standing normally, not on your toes.

Have someone else trace around your foot with the pen held straight up and down (vertical to the floor), not at an angle. Keep your foot still and relaxed while they trace. Repeat this for both feet on separate sheets, since most people have one foot slightly larger than the other.

Step 3: Mark the Key Points

Once you have the outline, mark these points clearly on the paper, similar to the reference diagram above:

  • The tip of your longest toe (this is not always the big toe)
  • The back of your heel
  • The widest point across the ball of your foot, near the toes (shown as roughly 10.5 cms or 4.2 inches across in the diagram)
  • The narrower point across the heel area (shown as roughly 7.5 cms or 3 inches across in the diagram)

Step 4: Take the Measurements

Now measure the outline using your ruler:

  1. Foot Length: Measure a straight line from the back of the heel to the tip of your longest toe. In the diagram, this full length reads about 29 cms or 11.4 inches, this is your most important measurement and yours may vary.
  2. Foot Width (Ball): Measure straight across the widest part of the outline, just below the toes.
  3. Foot Width (Heel): Measure straight across the narrower part of the outline near the heel.
  4. Arch Length (optional, but useful for a precise fit): Measure diagonally from the back of the heel to the ball of the foot, roughly where your foot bends when you walk. The diagram marks this diagonal at around 10 cms or 4 inches, with about 1½ inches or 3.8 cms of height at the arch point.

Do this for both feet and always size your shoes to the larger of the two measurements.

A Few Tips for Accuracy

  • Measure in the evening. Feet naturally swell a little through the day, so an evening measurement gives you a truer everyday size.
  • Stand, do not sit. Your foot spreads under body weight when standing, which is closer to how it behaves inside a shoe.
  • Measure both feet, every time. Do not assume they are identical.
  • Wear the socks you will actually wear. Thin socks and thick socks can make a small but real difference.
  • Keep the pen truly vertical while tracing. A tilted pen adds extra width or length to the outline that is not really there.

Matching Your Measurement to a Lupen Size

Once you have your foot length in inches or centimetres, compare it against Lupen's UK size chart (available on our size guide page) to find your correct UK size. If your measurement falls between two sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for a more comfortable, breathable fit, especially with our Goodyear Welt and Blake Stitch constructions, which mould to your foot over time.

If you are ever unsure, our team is just a message away on WhatsApp at +91 88558 04535 or at support@lupen.in. Share your measurements with us and we will help you choose the right size before your pair goes into production.

Crafted Around You

Every pair at Lupen is made to order, built around real measurements rather than a generic last. Taking two minutes to trace your foot properly is the small step that makes the biggest difference in how your shoes feel, from the first wear to the hundredth.

Trace it. Measure it. Wear it right.
